Peter Lloyd leisure centre opening delayed again

The reopening of a North Liverpool leisure centre has been delayed by a further seven months.

Peter Lloyd Leisure Centre in Tuebrook is now expected to open its doors to the public in September - a full year later than planned as delays to repair works drag on.

Liverpool Council confirmed the news on Twitter while Cllr Harry Doyle, Cabinet Member for Culture and Visitor Economy, expressed his disappointment at a further delay to the select committee on Tuesday.

In a tweet the council said: “We know Peter Lloyd Lifestyles users are disappointed it's still closed. It's taking longer than expected to commission repairs due to the work needed.

“The estimated date is September 2022 & we are also looking at further improvements we can make.”

Updating committee members, Cllr Doyle expressed his disappointment on the ongoing delays to the Tuebrook renovation.

He said: “I’m disappointed with the lack of progress on Peter Lloyd.

“Members know I’m passionate about leisure and this serves my community that I represent.

“The procurement team are now right on top of this and they are looking for further improvements during this time.

“It has been delayed for far too long.”

Cllr Doyle said procurement team members met with contractors on site on Monday and he remained hopeful that the centre would be able to reopen before the proposed date of September this year.

As reported in September 2021, the Lifestyles centre on Bankfield Road had been expected to open in the Autumn of last year before Cllr Doyle confirmed complications had arisen with the works, resulting in a further set back.

A winter date for reopening had been pencilled in but has now been missed once again.

At that time, Cllr Doyle told committee members that around £500,000 of capital had been invested in Peter Lloyd and underlined the local authority’s commitment to the site.

Other Lifestyles centres which have been shut since the start of the pandemic, Everton Park and Park Road, were able to reopen to visitors in September.

In a statement to members, Cllr Doyle said he has asked for a clear timetable on repairs from the council's director of finance which will be monitored weekly.
