Peter Kay could play Bristol Arena on rumoured 'major comeback tour'

Peter Kay is rumoured to have a big comeback tour in the works for 2023, which would be his first tour in over a decade since his last one back in 2011. The 48-year-old comedian was due to tour around the UK back in 2018, but had to cancel as he stepped away from the limelight as a result of 'unforeseen family circumstances'.

When tickets were released for his last tour in November 2017, the Car Share star risked the wrath of his Welsh fans after confirming that he would not be playing in Cardiff if Bristol Arena had been built in time. Of course, the Bolton comedian then ended up not playing in either city, but with another tour rumoured in the works and the Bristol Arena 'on track' to open in 2024, could Peter Kay be coming to Bristol?

Kay's last tour was set to go ahead in 2018/19, meaning his next tour could be happening towards the end of 2023, and into 2024, which is when Bristol Arena is set to open its doors. Speaking to fellow comic Jason Manford on Absolute Radio before he cancelled his last tour, Kay said he would rather play at Bristol Arena than Cardiff's 5,000 capacity Motorpoint Arena, leading to accusations from Welsh fans that he had 'ignored' the Welsh capital.

Kay said: "Now, they’re supposed to be opening a new arena in Bristol which is literally across the bridge and this new arena is gonna be a big ‘un.

"So I’m hanging on, to see if it transpires if there’s an arena – it’s on the cards. That’s what I’m waiting for because Cardiff arena is wonderful and I’ve not ruled it out but the Bristol arena would actually be better.

"It would be raked seating so everyone would get a good view of the stage. They’re better them new arenas because they’re like an amphitheatre – it’s closer and everyone’s got a good view."

Since cancelling his last tour, Kay has hardly been seen in the public eye, apart from taking part in two Q&A sessions to raise money at a charity event in Manchester last year, and DJing at Dance For Live events in April. Regarding Kay's latest tour, a source told The Sun: "He has lined up huge venues across the country including in Manchester, London and Birmingham and is hoping to announce it in September.

"Peter has not performed a live stand-up set on a big stage in well over a decade now but he could not be more ready to get back out there."

Before it was cancelled, the 100-gig Peter Kay Live Tour sold out. But, after spending time away from the limelight, Peter reassured fans recently that he was doing 'great', as he attended a charity event in his beloved hometown of Bolton last month. The Phoenix Nights star was the guest of honour as he helped launch a wheelchair-accessible 'wheelyboat'.

Bristol Live has contacted Peter Kay's representatives for comment.
