Confident Peter Grant has predicted a Celtic title win ahead of Rangers next season as he insisted Ange Postecoglou has assembled the best squad in the country.
The champions begin their campaign against Aberdeen on Sunday having not suffered defeat in a league game since last September, with a return to the Champions League group stage for the first time in five seasons just around the corner. Postecoglou has moved to add depth to his title-winning squad while retaining loanees Jota, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Daizen Maeda on permanent deals while adding Benjamin Siegrist, Alexandro Bernabei, Aaron Mooy and Moritz Jenz.
However, it has been far from a quiet summer across the city as Gio van Bronckhorst reshapes last season's Europa League finalists and Scottish Cup winners following the departure of key men Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey. The Dutchman has added seven new faces this summer as he looks to bring the title back to Govan.
The likes of Tom Lawrence, Ridvan Yilmaz, Ben Davies and John Souttar aren't enough for Grant to back Rangers to lift the trophy in May. He insists Celtic have 22 players who could battle for a starting spot going into the opening day fixture with Jim Goodwin's side.
When asked for his league title prediction on The Go Radio Football Show, Grant said: “I’m going to surprise you and say Celtic. I think it’s proven that they have the best squad, I would say, at this moment in time.
"I think they have 20-22 players you would call first team players and I don’t think Rangers have that. I think they have signed quality, I have been very impressed with the signings Rangers have done, but I just think Celtic have a more rounded squad.
“I would still like another defender. I know they signed Jenz last week but I feel that is an important area for them, centre-back. If (Christopher) Jullien goes I think they will need another central defender, because it’s a long season and an awkward season with the World Cup.
"I definitely think they have changes they can make, but you judge the best teams by the bench. I think Celtic have the best bench.”
