Peter Foster faces court on the Gold Coast, slams fraud-related charges as 'bogus'

Peter Foster has foreshadowed legal action against the Queensland Police Service following his footy-tackle-style arrest in Port Douglas two years ago.

But in an unexpected move, Mr Foster said any compensation awarded to him would be donated to charity.

"I'm very unhappy with the way [they arrested me] on the Queensland beach," Mr Foster said.

"And that may see action for compensation."

Mr Foster made the comments outside Southport Magistrates Court following a brief mention of his criminal charges on Thursday.

He faced court briefly on Thursday, accused of defrauding a Hong Kong pilot of Bitcoin, valued at about $2 million, in 2019 and 2020.

Mr Foster was infamously arrested by covert officers while walking his dog on the beach in Port Douglas in 2020.

Compensation for arrest injury allegations

The 59-year-old said since being granted bail by a Queensland court on multi-million-dollar fraud charges, he alleged he had sought-medical treatment on his knee.

"So I'm a bit dirty on it.

"But if we do get any compensation on whatever is awarded, I'll give it to the victims of the crime, I'll give it to the RSPCA, I'll give it to whatever charities people want.

"I don't want to do this for my personal gain, I just want to do it to ensure that those that do it [make arrests] think carefully because there's no need to arrest in the way they did on the beach."

Mr Foster said the Port Douglas scuffle was the most physical altercation with authorities he had ever had.

He described the police officers who tackled him as two who "should be playing for the North Queensland Cowboys" rugby league team.

Mr Foster has been charged with five counts of publishing false or misleading material to obtain an advantage, 10 counts of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception and knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime with intent to conceal.

Mr Foster was arrested on a hobby farm in rural Victoria late last year after failing to surrender to Queensland Police, who had issued a warrant for his arrest.

He was granted bail in May this year by the Southport Magistrates Court.

Claims 'notoriety' led to charges

Foster today described the Queensland charges as "bogus" and a "State of Origin stitch-up" by New South Wales police, who had given Queensland police a "hospital pass".

He told ABC the charges were only being pursed by Queensland police officers because of his infamy.

The case will return to court on July 28.

Foster has denied the charges.
