Peter Drury to replace Martin Tyler as Sky Sports voice of football

Commentator Peter Drury will replace Martin Tyler at Sky Sports.

The Daily Mail have revealed the 55-year-old will become the main commentator for the broadcaster as part of their coverage of the Premier League. It comes after Tyler, 77, didn't have his contract renewed after being the voice of the action from the English top-flight for 33 years.

It has been said that Drury will continue to present for the US audience as part of his current deal with NBC Sports with an announcement set to be made in the near future. As part of the move, he will focus on one game a week, which will fall on a Sunday, Monday or midweek.

The commentator has become synonymous for providing the overlay for some of football's most memorable moments.

As Everton stayed in the Premier League on the final day of last season, Drury poetically captured the moment at Goodison Park. He said: "Staying alive, Everton, the spirit of the Blues, you never shone so brightly. It is a grand old team to play for, it's a grand old team to support and if you know your history, you will understand just what it means."

Liverpool fans often share the commentary of his American coverage. And last season, during Reds' 7-0 thrashing of Manchester United, Drury said: "Salah rolls it in, Firmino! Bobby, seven, heaven. It's madness, these now are crazy numbers. Liverpool utopia, an unimaginable zenith. For Manchester United, a crushing nadir, inexplicable, illogical, irascible, scarcely digestible, barely conceivable.

"A story at Anfield of restored faith, restore verve, restored appetite. That is Liverpool as you remember them and that is Manchester United as they would rather forget."

On the appointment, the 55-year-old expressed his excitement, he said: "I'm massively excited to be joining Sky's outstanding roster of commentators. To be working on the best games week in week out with a broadcaster that has told the Premier League story since the very beginning feels like the opportunity of my career and I can't wait to get started."

The departure of the long-standing Tyler marks another change at Sky with Jeff Stelling leaving their Soccer Saturday service.

"Everyone at Sky Sports would like to say a heartfelt thank you to Martin for his unparalleled contribution and dedication to our coverage over the last 30 years. 'The Voice' will always be synonymous with the Premier League and Sky Sports," Sky Sports' director Gary Hughes said of Tyler's departure.

"When you think of commentary, you think of Martin Tyler. 'Collymore closing in' (from Liverpool’s 4-3 win over Newcastle in 1996) and 'Aguerrrrrroooooooooo' are two of the greatest moments in Premier League history. We thank him and wish him all the very best for the future."
