Hey, you can’t fault a guy for feeling confident. Pete Werner has been one of the breakout players of this difficult New Orleans Saints season, often standing out when the team has needed him. He’s currently working his way back from midseason ankle surgery, and Werner didn’t mince words when asked about expectations moving forward, despite their 4-9 record.
“Our mindset is win each day,” Werner said at the end of his Wednesday media availability session. “And we’re going 4-0 from this point on, and whatever happens, happens.”
It’s a good attitude to have, and it’s really the only thing the Saints can say right now. Capitulating isn’t an option even when the odds are long — and we do mean long, with FiveThirtyEight’s projections giving them less than one percent of a chance at reaching the playoffs. The games still need to be played. Keep your chin up and go to work.
Hopefully Werner can get back on the field and help out with those efforts. Veteran backup Kaden Elliss has done a fine job filling in for him, but Werner has been their best defender when he’s been on the field this season. Adding him back to the lineup would do a lot to help their case on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons. We’ll just have to wait and see if he can play.
