Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump's nominee for Secretary of Defense, is actively engaging in meetings on Capitol Hill to garner support for his nomination. Since being selected for the position, Hegseth has been holding private discussions with senators in Washington, D.C., in preparation for his confirmation hearing scheduled for next year.
On Wednesday, Hegseth continued his efforts by meeting with incoming Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., who is expected to chair the Armed Services Committee, followed by a crucial meeting with incoming Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D.
Despite facing allegations of drinking and sexual misconduct, which he has vehemently denied, Hegseth remains resolute in his pursuit of the Defense secretary role. Reports suggest that President Trump is contemplating nominating Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as an alternative to Hegseth in light of the allegations.
However, Hegseth remains undeterred by the potential replacement, citing a conversation with Trump where he was encouraged to persevere. Hegseth emphasized his commitment to the military, stating, 'Why would I back down? I have always been a fighter. I am here for the war fighters.'
He further expressed his dedication by mentioning his full-day schedule of meetings with senators to secure their backing for his nomination.
