Peso Pluma, the Mexican music icon, has recently ventured deep into South America, driven by his ambition to globalize his music through a collaboration with Brazilian superstar Anitta, his love for soccer, and his romantic relationship with Argentine singer Nicki Nicole.
On Thursday night, in his first concert in Argentina, Peso Pluma showed his admiration for the 2022 FIFA World Cup champions. In a candid moment, he acknowledged the rivalry between Mexico and Argentina, donning Messi's jersey and hailing him as the greatest.
But first...Anitta
Hours before, Peso Pluma released his new song. He teamed up with Brazilian singer Anitta for a sultry new reggaetón single, "Bellakeo."This collaboration marks a pivotal moment in his career, blending reggaetón with funk, a step away from his typical music style.
Peso Pluma is better known for his corridos tumbados. The song's music video, directed by Willy Rodríguez, adds a dark, sensual vibe, highlighting the duo's chemistry and their dancers' powerful performances.
Peso Pluma's collaboration with Anitta comes after his breakout song "Ella Baila Sola," featuring Eslabón Armado, reached one billion streams on Spotify this week. Peso Pluma was also recognized as Variety's breakthrough artist of the year, and "Ella Baila Sola" is one of the New York Times best songs of 2023. He is also nominated for the 2024 Grammy Awards for his maiden album, "Genésis."
Peso Pluma takes Buenos Aires
During the concert in Argentina, Peso Pluma's engagement with the audience was palpable. He sang the anthem "Muchachos," which accompanied the Argentine team throughout the World Cup.
His acknowledgment of Argentina's victory over Mexico and Lionel Messi's unparalleled skills was a heartfelt tribute to Argentine excellence in football. It was such a shocking moment for a Mexican soccer fan that Argentinian sports website TyC called it "sincericidio," a mix of sincerity and suicide. Mexico's national team hasn't managed a victory over Argentina, so it is a sore point.
The presence of Milo J, the current MVP of Argentine rap, and the endorsement on the stage by multi-awarded Argentinian producer Bizarrap added a unique flair to the concert, highlighting Peso Pluma's versatility and respect for local talents.
Peso Pluma's next shows will be in Asunción, Paraguay on December 15th, followed by Bogotá, Colombia on December 17th. He plans to go back to South America in February to take part in the iconic Viña del Mar Festival in Chile.
