Pervert throttled woman, teen died in quarry and unusual heat symptoms

These are the latest ECHO headlines this morning.

Pervert throttled and sexually assaulted woman on busy city centre street

A pervert attacked a woman, sexually assaulted her and stole her possessions on a busy city centre street.

Cole Thomas headbutted and throttled his victim before groping her during a shocking incident outside St Johns Shopping Centre. The 22-year-old then made vile threats to rape her and her family.

Liverpool Crown Court heard on Monday, that the incident occurred shortly before midday on November 9 last year. Thomas, from Aigburth, "began shouting at" the complainant before grabbing her fingers and headbutting her.

She pushed him away, but he responded by "grabbing her round the throat and digging his fingers into her neck". The defendant continued to be "verbally abusive", calling her "disgusting" and saying her mum was a "paedo".

Thomas, of Mossley Hill Drive, then told her: "I hope you get raped. I will rape your mum and siblings while I'm at it."

He then began "stroking her face" and grabbed her breasts over her clothing as she was pinned up against a wall. The sex offender "suggested she was enjoying it" and added: "How does it feel to be touched without consent?"

'Loveable' son who died in quarry was 'one of a kind'

The family of a teenager who died in a quarry earlier this month have revealed their final wish.

Jamie Lewin was at Dawber Delph with his uncle on Saturday, July 9, when he got into difficulties while swimming. Emergency services attended and after a search of the water, the 16-year-old's body was found.

The teen from Southport was preparing to start his bricklaying apprenticeship in September, his dad told the ECHO, with Jamie having excelled in his vocational GCSEs. Now the family are heartbroken after getting the phone call on Saturday evening that he had struggled in the water.

His body was found after dad, Luke, and mum, Steph, arrived separately at the quarry. Luke Kenyon, 34, described his son as a "bright young boy".

Luke said: "He and his mum were best friends, they had just got back from holiday with each other. He was such a nice, bright young boy. He was never in any trouble and was known by a lot of people. Everyone liked him. He had great plans and had a vision of what he was going to do. He worked hard to get his qualifications and we're all very proud of him."

A doctor has issued a warning to people over some of the lesser-known consequences of extreme heat.

A summer heatwave has hit the UK as soaring temperatures across the country have prompted the Met Office to issue a rare amber and red heat warning. The alert started on Sunday at 1am and will remain in force tonight until 11.59pm.

Forecasters expect sweltering conditions on Merseyside today as temperatures could rise to 34C. While sweating, increased thirst and sleepless nights are common symptoms in the extreme heat, health experts have explained some of the more unusual symptoms people could experience.

Symptoms you could experience in the heat include nosebleeds, upset stomach and breathlessness. Read the full symptoms here.
