The Briefing

  • 173 officials elected in Peru's October 4 regional vote — including 59 mayors — carry current or past entries in the country's informal mining formalization registry, according to a post-election Instituto de Estudios Peruanos (IEP) analysis.
  • REINFO, Peru's provisional informal mining permit system created in 2016, is scheduled to expire in December 2026 — just weeks after these officials take office.
  • Southern Peru's mining corridor — Apurímac, Arequipa, Puno and Ayacucho — accounts for 69% of the officials identified, concentrating regulatory pressure exactly where enforcement has historically been weakest.
