Perthshire curlers set for world stage after title triumph at Scottish Juniors

Fair City curler Holly Wilkie-Milne is quickly turning attention to the world stage after winning the Scottish Junior Championship.

The former Perth Academy student plays for Team Henderson alongside Fay Henderson, Robyn Munro and Laura Watt, the latter of whom is from Auchterarder.

They swept to success at the Scottish Juniors at Curl Aberdeen by defeating Team Mitchell 6-5 in the final.

It was a win which has booked a ticket to the World Junior B Championship in Finland next month.

“We are completely delighted to have won and it was made all the more special by having to grind out that win in the final,” Wilkie-Milne told the PA.

“It went down to the final stones in the 10th end, which was quite nerve wracking. There is nothing like the feeling of excitement when it sinks in that you’ve won, and you get presented with that medal.

“Now we’re very excited to get out to the Bs in Finland, especially as it is so soon.

“I expect the quality of opposition out there to be high – we know that alongside ourselves there is Canada and Korea, and England who we have played in some U21 slam events.”

Wilkie-Milne added: “It’s a really short turnaround until we fly out to Finland, so we will be prioritising our training and making sure to have good team sessions while making the most of what we have learnt from the Scottish.

“We also fly out to Switzerland next weekend to compete in another European Junior Curling Tour (EJCT) event in Thun, which is a great opportunity to get some quality game time.

“Then it will just be a matter of trusting that training, and representing Scotland once again to the best of our abilities.

“I always think that wearing the Scottish kit always pushes you to play to the highest standards, so it will be exciting to see what results we can produce.”

Playing in the same team as former Perth Junior Curling Club member Watt has been a special experience.

“We have had success in Scotland and also abroad, competing against some of the players we may see on the world stage,” Wilkie-Milne said.

“It’s a new lineup again this year with myself and Fay Henderson together for a third year in a row, but Laura and Robyn joining us.

“It’s been great to see that we can pull together winning performances despite being relatively new to each other.

“And is nice to have Laura in the team as we were both part of the Perth Junior Curling Club, and have played together before a few years ago.”
