Perthshire curler Mark Watt wins gold at Winter World University Games

Auchterarder curler Mark Watt clinched gold at the Winter World University Games over the weekend.

A regular at the Dewars Centre in Perth, Watt – representing Great Britain – teamed-up with James Craik, Angus Bryce, Blair Haswell and alternate Jack Carrick in Lake Placid, USA.

The trophy was proudly lifted following a 5-1 victory in the final against the host country.

Skip Craik heaped praise on Watt and the rest of the team.

“We stuck together and rallied together and managed to pull through some really tough wins, which was the difference in the end, for sure,” he said. “The timeless amount of hours the guys put in really showed this week.”

Coach Iain Watt, from Perthshire, also had the spotlight turned in his direction following Great Britain’s gold medal-winning performance.

Craik said: “Iain’s been our team coach for years now and we’ve all got such a great relationship with him.

“He is a vital aspect for us and has got everything covered, everything dialled down to a tee.

“There is never anything missed or anything like that. We can put a lot of trust in him and he offers a lot of great insights and gives us real structure to our pre and post-game.

“We’re a very process driven team so we’re really thankful for that.”

In the women’s event there was play-off disappointment for Team Henderson – which included Perth’s Holly Wilkie-Milne and Auchterarder’s Laura Watt. They lost 7-3 to USA in the bronze medal play-off.
