Perth and Kinross Council grants building warrant for popular pub's balcony expansion plan

A popular Perth pub has been given the thumbs-up to press ahead with its balcony extension.

The new outdoor seating area with fire pits at the Cherrybank Inn will accommodate 80 more people.

And owner Scott Findlay is "champing at the bit" to get started.

In November, 2021 he sought planning permission to extend the pub's raised decking area and create some new toilets.

Planning permission was granted in February 2022. And just last week Perth and Kinross Council awarded a building warrant for the proposed works.

The Glasgow Road pub has been in the safe hands of former St Johnstone goalie Scott Findlay for the past few years. And Scott - who confesses to getting bored easily - has been making lots of changes since he took on the historic pub.

Excited, he told the LDRS: "I'm delighted. I'm champing at the bit to get started.

"It will add a different aspect. I want everyone to be able to enjoy the outdoor area. It will be a sort of chill area for drinks with fire pits and outside barbecues.

"There will be also be new toilets which were really needed."

Currently the ladies toilets are situated in the part of the building that dates back to 1761 leaving limited scope for renovations.

The new area will have sofas and provide the pub with a combined outdoor seating area for 320 people along with new ladies and gents toilets.

The only plans still to be ironed out are how to create a disabled access.

Scott said: "We are working to create a disabled access. It's difficult because the building is on a slope."

The pub is working alongside Dundee -based architects Jon Frullani Architect Ltd to explore options.

Local councillor Liz Barrett was pleased to hear the plans could be progressed.

The Perth City South Liberal Democrat councillor said: "The Cherrybank is very popular with all ages, whether for a coffee, a drink or a meal, and I’m delighted that Scott and team now have their building warrant and can get on with the alterations.

"I do look forward to this including disabled access, so that everyone can enjoy this great venue."

A spokesperson for Perth and Kinross Council told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: "Planning permission was granted earlier this year. The building warrant which has just been approved shows the work meets required standards."
