Person taken to RVI following serious crash on the A184 in Sunderland

One person has been taken to hospital following a collision on the A184 in Sunderland.

Emergency services attended the scene following the crash on the A184 Newcastle Road in Southwick has been closed due a crash between A1018 Shields Road and Blue House Lane which occurred some time around 4pm on Wednesday.

Crews from Northumbria Police, North East Ambulance Service and Great North Air Ambulance Service have been in attendance at the scene over the course of the evening. The road has been closed through the rush hour peak since around 5.30pm.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on Newcastle Road in Sunderland, shortly after 4.30pm this afternoon.

"We dispatched two ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, and a clinical team leader, and requested support from Great North Air Ambulance Service. One patient has been transported to the RVI for further treatment."

A spokesman for Northumbria Police added: "We can confirm we received reports of an RTC on A184 Newcastle Road between A1018 Shields Road and Blue House Lane at 4.10pm this evening.

"Officers are still allocated to the scene and the incident is ongoing."

At the time of publication, the A184 Newcastle Road remained closed between A1018 Shields Road and Blue House Lane. Traffic is coping well.
