A person has been rushed to hospital after a fire broke out at a Scots prison this evening.
Mercy crews raced to HMP Addiewell, near West Calder in West Lothian, after the alarm was raised at around 3.35pm on Wednesday. Emergency services were alerted to a fire within the prison.
Ambulance crews attended and a casualty was taken to hospital for treatment. Their condition is currently unknown.
Fire crews quickly dispatched three fire appliances but fighters have now left the scene. Police say their enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances of the blaze.
A Police Scotland spokesperson told the Record: “We were made aware of a fire within HMP Addiewell shortly after 3.35pm on Wednesday, May 3. Emergency services attended and one person has been taken to hospital by the ambulance service.
“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 3.34pm on Wednesday, May 3 to reports of a fire affecting HMP Addiewell, West Lothian. Operations Control mobilised three fire appliances and one height vehicle and firefighters extinguished the fire.
“One casualty was in the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service and crews left after ensuring the area was made safe.”
