A Walmart Supercenter security guard was injured in a struggle with shoplifting suspects who fired a gun before fleeing the store Saturday in Olympia Fields.

Officers responded to a report of shots fired at the Walmart at 21000 Western Avenue about 9:40 a.m. and found the woman, who was working security, with an injury to her head, Olympia Fields Police Chief Derrick Blasingame said.

She was “conscious and alert” and taken to Olympia Fields Hospital in good condition, Blasingame said. Doctors at the hospital determined that her head injury was not a gunshot wound but rather caused by her hitting her head on the floor during the struggle. She has since been released.

Preliminary information suggests the struggle began when the woman confronted three suspected shoplifters, Blasingame said, adding that the investigation indicates the suspects fired a shot.

The three fled the store and drove off, Blasingame said.

State Rep. Debbie Meyers-Martin said she hopes the victim “survives her injuries and makes a full recovery.”

No suspects were in custody.
