A person has died after being hit by a train on a busy railway line this morning. All lines are currently closed between Aberdeen and Dundee until around 9am after the incident happened near Montrose.
Emergency services raced to the scene after the alarm was raised at around 5.30am on Monday morning. Network Rail said train services may be cancelled or diverted as a result.
Ambulance crews attended but the person was pronounced dead at the scene. British Transport Police are not treating the deat as suspicious and confirmed a report would be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
Network Rail said: "A person has been hit by a train between Aberdeen and Dundee. As all lines are currently closed, trains may be cancelled or diverted until approximately 9am".
A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to the line in Aberdeen at 5.31am on June 19 following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be prepared for the Procurator Fiscal.”
Routes affected include the Caledonian Sleeper between Aberdeen and Edinburgh, the Aberdeen and Dundee/Penzance CrossCountry and the LNER train between Aberdeen and London King's Cross.
A number of ScotRail services are also impacted including routes between Inverurie, Inverness, Dyce, Aberdeen and Montrose.
ScotRail customers can use their ticket on Citylink buses between Aberdeen and Dundee and Stagecoach East buses between Arbroath and Inverkeithing.
