Animated children’s show Peppa Pig has introduced its first same-sex couple.

In an episode titled Families, which aired on Channel 5 on Tuesday, Penny Polar Bear introduces her two mums to the titular character.

Another scene sees Penny drawing with school friends Suzi Sheep and Danny Dog.

In her sketch, she draws herself holding hands with two polar bears in dresses, as she explains: “I live with my mummy and my other mummy. One mummy is a doctor and one mummy cooks spaghetti.”

Peppa Pig first aired in 2004 and has become a huge international hit, broadcasting in 180 countries around the world.

The move to introduce a same-sex couple follows a 2019 online petition which attracted close to 24,000 signatures.

The episode has been praised by Robbie de Santos, from LGBT+ charity Stonewall.

“It’s fantastic that same-sex families are making an appearance in Peppatown,” he told the Sun.

“Many of those who watch the show will have two mums or two dads themselves and it will mean a lot that their experiences are being represented on such an iconic children’s programme.”

The Standard has contacted a representative for the creators of Peppa Pig for comment.

Peppa Pig is not the first children’s animated series to feature a same-sex couple.

Cartoon Arthur won praise after featuring a same-sex wedding during its 22nd series back in 2019.
