'Pep was right' - Man City fans not happy after Mohamed Salah beats Kevin De Bruyne to PFA award

Manchester City fans aren’t happy after Mohamed Salah beat Kevin De Bruyne to the PFA Player of the Year award.

Both players enjoyed superb seasons, with Salah finishing as the Premier League’s joint-top scorer with 23 goals, as well as contributing 13 assists. De Bruyne meanwhile ended the campaign as City’s top scorer, having bagged 15 goals and eight assists.

De Bruyne was looking to become the first player to win a third Player of the Year award, as well as making it a hat-trick of triumphs after claiming the prize in 2020 and 2021. However, the Belgian missed out as Salah claimed his second Player of the Year prize.

De Bruyne was perhaps hindered by the voting for the award closing before the end of the season. Players pick their winners in the spring, meaning Salah potentially held a slight advantage given his performances during the first half of the campaign.

Nevertheless, City fans weren’t best pleased with the outcome of the result. Many saw it as evidence of Pep Guardiola’s suggestion that Liverpool are liked more than City, while others criticised the voting system.

Speaking after winning the award, Salah said: “It's a great honour to win a trophy, individual or collective and this one is big so, very happy and very proud of that.

"This one is a really good one to win, especially because it's voted by players. It shows you that you've worked really hard and you get what you worked for. I have my room with trophies in a cabinet and I made sure that I had another space for one more. I always keep space and just try to imagine that the trophies are going to come.”
