Fans are questioning Hansi Flick's decision to substitute Ilkay Gundogan in Germany's World Cup loss to Japan - providing Pep Guardiola with plenty of food for thought.
With the four-time world champions in cruise control, the Manchester City midfielder was substituted on 67 minutes. Gundogan put Germany 1-0 up from the spot in the first half and had the midfield battle seemingly won. Japan were limited to sporadic attacks and appeared to be heading for an opening-game defeat.
Germany's overwhelming 74 per cent possession throughout the game was largely due to Gundogan and Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich dictating proceedings. However, when manager Flick withdrew the City ace on 67 minutes, the game turned on its head.

Few could have expected Japan to spring into action and shock one of the pre-tournament favourites. Two goals in eight minutes from Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano earned their side an unlikely win - their first comeback triumph in World Cup history.
One City supporter acknowledged the contrast between Guardiola and Flick's thinking. At times, the Spaniard has introduced the 32-year-old late on to see out results. Germany boss Flick paid the price for hooking Gundogan as his side were stunned at the Khalifa International Stadium.
At 32, Gundogan is not the long-term solution at the Etihad Stadium. But Guardiola clearly values the veteran, having started him in 10 out of 14 Premier League games this season.
Keeping an operator like Bayern Munich's Leon Goretzka out of the side is reflective of Gundogan's ability. The challenge is keeping Gundogan in Manchester as question marks remain over his future.
"We will see," he said when asked if he would stay at City beyond next summer. "Right now, it's really just about focusing on the new season."
