Pep Guardiola warns Man City players after Rodri revenge claim

Pep Guardiola warned his Manchester City players would be making a "huge mistake" if they went out looking for revenge against Real Madrid.

City are back at the Bernabeu a year after suffering agonising heartbreak in the Champions League when they were leading by two goals until the 180th minute of their semi-final yet crumbled to lose. Real went on to beat Liverpool in the final in Paris and claim a 14th crown while the Blues were left to work out what had gone wrong in those mad few minutes.

The draw has given City the chance to make up for last year's disappointment, only with the first leg in Madrid this time. Both camps expect the Manchester return fixture to be where the tie is decided, yet Rodri spoke of how the match offered City the chance to earn some revenge.

"We will have the chance for revenge, we have the philosophy you can learn from past experiences, we did a great two games but didn’t go through," he said. "We are here to fight again with motivation, the feeling we’ve done things well and arrive in our best moment. We can learn about what we can improve and what we did bad in that moment."

Guardiola disagreed though, stating: "That would be a huge mistake. We are not here for revenge.

"What happened happened in the past. When you win it is because you deserve it. I'm not saying we were not a proper team, we did more than everything to reach the final but it is football - it is not enough.

"Hopefully we can learn and be better. The lesson we can learn from last season is not to make revenge but learn a little bit what happened, get a good result and perform well tomorrow and give the opportunity to reach the final open in Manchester.
