Pep Guardiola told to copy Arsenal transfer trick to sign new Man City midfielder

Steve McManaman has urged former club Manchester City to target Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister when the transfer window opens.

Speculation over the World Cup winner and his Brighton future continues to grow due to his impressive performances for club and country. It comes amid uncertainty over two of City's current midfield options.

City captain Ilkay Gundogan only has three months left to run on his contract and Bernardo Silva has once again been linked with a move away. Mac Allister continues to keep elite Premier League clubs on red alert after joining Brighton four years ago.

Having totted up 95 appearances for the Seagulls in that time, contributing 16 goals and seven assists, the 24-year-old has also been capped 14 times by Argentina and was part of their World Cup success last year. Mac Allister is under contract until 2025.

But does he have what it takes to play for City? Speaking to Betfred, former City player McManaman said: "Yes, I don't see why not.

"Sticking him in Manchester City's team is hard, but I think he'd fit in because he's a good player and he would fit into other top teams. Is he better than [Kevin] De Bruyne, Rodri, Gundogan and Bernardo? I wouldn't say he's better than them, but he could certainly play with them.

"If you're a good player and you're good on the ball, then you'd have no problem playing in a top team as they'll have incredible players who help you along the way."

McManaman added: "It would be similar to Leandro Trossard moving to Arsenal. I liked how he played with Brighton and I liked his movement and the way that he dropped his shoulder and picked up really good spaces. Mac Allister could do exactly the same."
