Pep Guardiola issues injury update on Erling Haaland ahead of Man City vs Chelsea

Erling Haaland is still struggling with an ankle injury and a late decision will be made on his involvement in the Carabao Cup third-round tie against Chelsea at the Etihad on Wednesday.

The Norwegian is suffering ligament damage rather than a broken bone and he came off the bench to score a dramatic late winner for City from the penalty spot against Fulham on Saturday.

The 22-year-old is still not fully fit, but he could be included in Norway's squad for two friendlies against Ireland and Finland next week.

Although the World Cup is scheduled for November and December, it isn't technically a FIFA window and clubs can block players from being called up for friendlies.

But Guardiola will let Haaland go if he feels fit enough to do so, even though he isn't guaranteed of being fit enough to start for the Blues this week.

“He is still not perfect. We will see tomorrow and on Saturday," said Guardiola.

"He is getting better. It’s important the bone is not broken, it’s not damaged, just ligament damage a little. It’s not perfect right now. In one week or 10 days anything can happen.

"If he feels good… playing for the national team is important for the players. I never avoid the players when they are going to play for the national team."

Kalvin Phillips will be in the squad to face Chelsea as he makes his comeback from shoulder surgery, but Kyle Walker will remain absent with a groin problem.

The City medical team remain in contact with England ahead of Gareth Southgate's World Cup squad announcement on Thursday.

"I think they are communicating with the physios, doctors from the England national team. A part of that [whether the pair will play at the World Cup] I cannot answer you, I do not know," said Guardiola.
