Pep Guardiola dismisses Jurgen Klopp factor in Man City new contract talks

Pep Guardiola has no plan to rush into a new contract extension after his Liverpool rival Jurgen Klopp this week extended his deal until 2026. The two men are locked in an intense rivalry for honours again this season, just one point separating them in the Premier League title race and on course to meet in the Champions League final at the end of May.

Klopp’s contract had been due to expire in 2024 but Liverpool announced yesterday that he will stay on until 2026 at least. Guardiola’s City deal is due to run out next summer and, despite repeatedly saying he would love to stay for longer, there has been no rush to extend his contract beyond that.

Asked about Klopp’s new deal, Guardiola said he would rather talk about tomorrow’s game against Leeds. He said: “I don’t know — it’s focus on Leeds, an important game. Congrats to Jurgen and Liverpool, it's really good for them, and I wish him all the best. Our future is Leeds and then the end of the season.”
