Pep Guardiola delivers blunt verdict on Everton penalty and VAR call against Man City

Pep Guardiola has shared his thoughts on the contentious penalty decision that saw Everton denied a late spot kick against Manchester City.

The Citizens boss insists there was an offside in the build-up to the Rodri handball - and agrees with the referee's decision.

Frank Lampard's side suffered a cruel defeat against the current Premier League champions on Saturday evening as 80 minutes of hard work was quickly undone by a close range effort from Phil Foden.

However, moments later the hosts had a penalty shout turned down by the referee and VAR opted against overturning the original decision or suggesting a second look in the monitor.

The incident has drawn more criticism of the technology and referees, but the City boss says it was the right call.

"It was offside," the City boss told Sky Sports post-match. "VAR looked and the action was offside.

"I didn't see the VAR. If they say penalty, it's a penalty. No penalty, then no penalty. I didn't see the image so I don't have time."

Guidance from the Premier League, however, confirmed that the VAR didn't believe there was a clear error for what was a subjective decision.

It is understood VAR official Chris Kavanagh didn't feel there was enough "conclusive evidence" to reverse the decision.

Lampard delivered a verdict of his own in his post-match interviews and says his side were 'denied what they deserved'.

"I've spoken to the officials on the day and they know it's a penalty," he said. "So my question is whether it was offside in the build-up, it wasn't.

"The decision is incredible. It's an incredible decision. It loses us the opportunity to get what we deserved."
