When it comes to haircuts the mullet has a special place in the hearts of many. From Rod Stewart to Chris Waddle - stars of everything from sport to the stage have been seen sporting the look.
The classic look of short on the top with longer locks at the back was loved by men in the 80s. And it even had its own song - the Beastie Boys 1994 hit Mullet Head.
Now people can get a new look for free - as long as they are happy to have the mullet cut. What has been claimed to be the "world's first" mullet-only hair salon will open on Saturday in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Geordie favourite Vicky Pattison will open Dirty Gertie’s Mullet Salon thanks to online gaming site Foxy Bingo at High Bridge. And to keep up the fun there will be musical bingo every hour with prizes on offer alongside the free haircuts over the two days of March 4 and 5.
It is also running a nationwide competition to win a gift card worth more than £2,000, open to those uploading their chopped locks onto social media.
The salon is opening as the site commissioned a poll to discover the truth about people who wear their hair in a mullet. A study of 2,000 adults, 500 of whom sport a mullet, found those with the cut have more fun than those who don't – enjoying more nights out, spicier food, and a better wardrobe, according to research.
It discovered those with the “party in the back” enjoy an average of five nights out a month – while the non-mulleted folk lagged behind, with an average of only three. Being a free spirit, somewhat mischievous, and “doing the unexpected”, topped a list of attributes those with the 80s inspired look, believe they have.
But those with more conventional cuts were less likely to think of themselves as a fashion-follower, and only seven per cent like to “make an impression” when they’re out.

A spokesman for Foxy Bingo said: “It’s no surprise to us that those with mullets are having more fun. There’s a real mullet movement happening as people get more experimental with their styles. We’re also on the hunt to find the UK’s “foxiest” mullet, offering mullet-goers the chance to win a gift card worth £2,023.”
The research also found the UK’s mulleted masses are more likely to prefer spicy food, are less likely to settle down to a game of Monopoly – and twice as likely to suggest a saucy game of truth or dare. Mulleted individuals also self-describe themselves as more “influential” in their friend groups than those with more traditional trims (66 per cent vs 37 per cent).
And they also socialise with colleagues a lot more than people with more conservative haircuts.
The study also saw Rod Stewart’s blow-dried masterpiece named the best celebrity mullet of all time – narrowly edging out David Bowie’s red shock of locks as Ziggy Stardust.
Bowie was hair-tied in second place with 80s icon Pat Sharp – while Roadhouse star Patrick Swayze, and footballer Chris Waddle, rounded out the top five. Other beloved celebrity mullets included Michael Bolton, Hulk Hogan, and country singer Billy Ray Cyrus – father of pop titan Miley, who has also sported a similar look.
It also emerged half of respondents rarely change their hairstyle, and 22 per cent believe they’ve become more conservative with their hair with age. However, 21 per cent of those polled, via OnePoll, claim their hair defines their personality – and 22 per cent think a change can make you feel like a whole different person.
Now Foxy Bingo says it is bringing "the mullet to the masses" with Dirty Gertie’s haircuts intended to style the wildest mullets and it will be offering a Mullet Menu for customers to choose from. Styles on offer will range from the 80s mullet to a more modern ‘shullet’. And a manicurist will be 'at hand' to offer complimentary sets of 'foxylicious nails' too.
The salon, at 15 High Bridge, will be open from 10am until 5pm on March 4 and 5 to walk-in customers who must be aged 18 or over.
