People urged to talk about benefit payments to prompt friends and family to check eligibility for similar support

The Scottish Government has highlighted how families and friends have a crucial role to play in ensuring social security payments reach those who need them most, by openly talking about support they are receiving in the hopes of encouraging others to check their own benefit entitlement.

On a visit to a Citizens Advice Bureau, as part of Challenge Poverty Week, Social Security Minister Ben Macpherson said talking about benefits would help drive take-up and reduce stigma about accessing benefits. The Scottish Government recently launched a new ‘one-stop shop’ website offering advice, information and free benefit calculators.

Benefit payments provide support to individuals and families on a low income, people with disabilities, carers, and young people entering the workplace. During the visit to the Citizens Advice Bureau in Muirhouse, Edinburgh, Mr Macpherson met staff and volunteers who provide information and advice about available financial assistance and wider support for those struggling with energy bills and the rising cost of living.
