NHS teams on special trucks are scanning people for lung cancer at supermarkets and sports centres.
They have already diagnosed 600 people from 23 sites which are issuing 25,000 invites a month.
A further 20 NHS trucks are being sent out to locations in England with some of the highest rates of lung cancer.
Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in the UK, accounting for one in five fatalities.
Figures show only 35% of patients attend lung checks when invited by the NHS.
Dame Cally Palmer, NHS cancer director, said: “By going into communities we find more people who may not have realised they have lung cancer. It is vital that as soon as invited, you take the offer.”
Those at higher risk of lung cancer invited for MOTs include current and former smokers.
NHS England estimates 7,700 cases will be caught earlier by 2024-25 by which time up to 1.5 million people will have been invited for a check.
UK survival rates, which rose to a 17% five-year rate pre-pandemic, still lag behind EU countries such as Spain, Italy, France and Germany.
