People on the move: Top North East appointments and promotions of the week

Catherine Lindsay has been appointed as operations director at Newcastle Strategic Solutions, the technology subsidiary of Newcastle Building Society.

Newcastle Strategic Solutions, which has 600 staff, provides savings management and technology services for savings providers and challenger banks across the UK from its base at Cobalt Business Park.

Ms Lindsay joins the team from Hitachi Capital, where she led the customer experience and operations function.

She said: “It’s a really exciting time to be joining Newcastle Strategic Solutions and I’m thrilled to become part of a fantastic team. Our focus is to shape our operations team to be truly scalable for our ambitious growth plans, delivering efficient service for clients to match their needs and outstanding experiences for customers.”

H&H Land & Estates has partnered with architectural practice Harraby Green Associates and welcomed Angus Hutchinson and Georgie Cray to its team of professional advisors.

Their expertise will enable the company to provide planning advice on all types of projects from farm buildings to housing developments.

Tracey Jackson, asssociate director of H&H Land & Estates said: “We are delighted to be working with Harraby Green Associates, to strengthen the full range of professional services we are able to provide to our clients.

“Their skillset complements those of our own professional team and means that we now offer a comprehensive integrated planning service, from start to finish. This will include site surveys, design and access statements, provision of architectural drawings, guidance through the planning application process, discharge of conditions, building regulation applications, right through to project management.”

A chief executive has been appointed to lead the restoration and renewal of the historic Redhills, Durham Miners Hall.

Nick Malyan will oversee the £8m redevelopment of the Grade II-listed hall, and its future operations as a centre for culture, heritage and education.

Before joining the Redhills development team, he was a founding director of regeneration organisation Empty Shop CIC, and held cultural development roles with Durham County Council and New Writing North.

Mr Malyan said: “Redhills is a beacon for working people and a symbol of our collective worth. The heritage it represents is of regional, national and international significance. My role now is to put the Durham miners’ proud heritage of collective endeavour to work, and ensure that Redhills is once again an engine of positive change for the Durham coalfield area and beyond.”

Silverstone Building Consultancy has appointed Paul Wharton as associate director at its Newcastle office.

He previously worked at Hollis Global for eight years and is part of Silverstone’s long-term, people-growth strategy.

Mr Wharton said: “The opportunity to work at Silverstone Building Consultancy was too good to miss. There is a great energy and a real can-do spirit. The team are all confident and ambitious but at the same time recognise that success is only truly possible through a strong team culture.”

Richard Farrey, director at Silverstone Building Consultancy, added: “Paul brings a strong spectrum of skills and has worked within the public sector, an area we are increasingly focussing on.”

Alex Laws and Melanie Marshall of The Office Rocks (The Office Rocks)

Sunderland based content marketers The Office Rocks has expanded its team with two new appointments.

With over 20 years experience in customer service and operations management, Melanie Marshall has joined the team as office manager to support MD Laura Middleton with the smooth running of the business during a period of growth.

Alex Laws will be heading up the new agency arm of The Office Rocks, providing outsourced marketing services for clients throughout the UK as digital marketing manager.

Law firm Ward Hadaway has further strengthened its social housing team to support its continued growth.

Partner Julia Thomson, based in the Newcastle office, has been appointed as head of social housing and has overall responsibility for leading the team across all three regions.

Partner Simon Thirtle has been appointed as the head of the firm’s housing management team. He joined Ward Hadaway with John Murray in 2013 and has played a key role in the success of the team since. Mr Murray, partner, moves from Leeds to the Newcastle office to set up a dedicated housing management service in the North East.

Meanwhile, Alistair McDonald has been promoted to strategic business development director for the built environment team.

Ms Thomson said: “We have made a number of strategic changes and appointments to our social housing team across all three regions to support our continued growth and strengthen and enhance our service offering to clients across the north and nationally.”
