People on the move: key North East appointments and promotions of the week

Tier One Capital has appointed Emma Hutchinson as investment associate.

She will support the independent wealth management and fund management specialist’s financial advisers in delivering advice to the firm’s expanding client base. Ms Hutchinson’s appointment coincides with Tier One Capital moving to a new office at the Newcastle Business Park.

Paul Blight, head of wealth management at Tier One Capital said: “As existing and new client levels grow, we are keen to attract reliable, talented and dedicated individuals into the business, like Emma, who is highly experienced in building longstanding relationships. Emma is a welcome addition to our team, that is experiencing a period of strong growth, as a result of our established reputation for flexible, bespoke and independent advice.”

Founder of Lingotot Angela Sterling (Newcastle Journal)

Angela Sterling has been appointed as regional chair of EWIF (Encouraging Women Into Franchising), an organisation seeking to change the face of the franchising industry to give women a larger voice and presence. Ms Sterling, founder and CEO of Lingotot, has been involved with EWIF for many years and previously stood as the North East regional chair of the group, which has built up a community which offers free advice, help sessions, guidance and more.

She takes over from Kieran James, alongside Fiona Leggott from Blossom Home Care who will be North East Regional Support. With combined years of experience and passion for franchising they will be providing regional support to all women in the North East either already in the franchising sector or looking to move into it.

She said: “I am blown away by the work EWIF does for women in franchising and am overjoyed to be a part of it. We are looking forward to our first regional meet up on 10th June at the Crowne Plaza Newcastle and for all that follows!”

Professor Cathy Cassell has been appointed as Executive Dean of Durham University Business School. She joins the university on September 1, taking over from Professor Kieran Fernandes, interim Executive Dean.

She joins from Birmingham Business School at the University of Birmingham. Under her leadership, there will be significant opportunities to enhance the Business School’s programme offering and research interests, to build on our leading online and digital platforms, to enhance the physical estate, and to foster partnerships across the globe and with other sectors.

She said: “I am excited by the global ambition of the University, the excellence of staff and students, and the opportunity to lead a high-profile Business School located in one of the UK’s most beautiful and historic cities.

“The collegiate nature of the Business School’s community is particularly inspiring, as well as its world-leading research, its educational offer and the important role it plays in Durham City and the wider North East region.”

Mike Williams and Lee Humble of Azets (Azets)

Azets has expanded its corporate finance team in the North, promoting Lee Humble to partner.

Mr Humble has worked in a number of roles across banking and corporate finance over the last 15 years, both in London and in the North for MHA Tait Walker, which recently became Azets.

He works with the corporate finance team to provide transactional, strategic, growth and funding solutions to businesses across the region, helping clients through what has been deemed a volatile market.

Meanwhile, Mike Williams, corporate finance manager, has been promoted to the role of associate director.

Mr Humble said: “My promotion to partner in such exciting times for the company is one I am delighted with. As Azets, we have the opportunity to continue helping clients work their way through the tricky market that we are presented with currently. Azets’ national reach has opened up new opportunities for the corporate finance team and our clients. We are now surrounded by multiple peers, with an extended influence across all regions, meaning we have like-minded individuals in every corner of the UK.”

Newcastle’s Nixon Hire has announced three new executive appointments to further facilitate the company’s ambitions and plans for future growth.

John Hudson is set to join Nixon Hire this month as chief financial officer, where he will be responsible for overseeing the full financial functions of the business. Paul Corten joined in April as group sales director, responsible for overseeing the sales, business development and marketing functions. Gerard Murray was appointed as chairman of the Nixon Hire Board in October 2021.

Graham Nixon, CEO of Nixon Hire said: “We are delighted to welcome Gerard, John and Paul to Nixon Hire and the board. We are confident that they will put the skills and expertise they have garnered within their previous roles to great use, in helping to put comprehensive strategies in place to allow us to realise the significant ambitions we have for the business.”

John Hollingsworth, chief philanthropy officer and deputy CEO at The Community Foundation (The Community Foundation)

The Community Foundation serving Tyne & Wear and Northumberland has appointed John Hollingsworth as its new chief philanthropy officer and deputy CEO.

Mr Hollingsworth, who was born and raised on Tyneside, has for 10 years held leading roles in charities in Detroit, Michigan.

Every year, the Foundation awards millions of pounds in grants to small, local charities and community organisations through funds set up by its donors. Since 2016, Mr Hollingsworth has served as development director for Racquet Up Detroit, a community-based charity which uses the sport of squash to engage young people in education, supporting them to access college and launch a career.

He said: “To serve North East England as part of the UK’s most successful Community Foundation team will be an honour and a privilege. I’ve been fortunate to work with some outstanding organisations, both in the UK and the US, and I’m inspired by the Community Foundation’s rich history of social impact. I have loved being part of Detroit’s vibrant and innovative charity sector for the past ten years. The experience has been life-changing and the community has been incredibly supportive. I’m now beyond excited to come home to the North East and help expand philanthropy in the region that means so much to me and my family.”
