The May Day bank holiday falls on Monday, May 1 and payments delivered by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), including Working Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, Child Benefit and Guardian’s Allowance, due on that date will be made early next week instead. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has also confirmed similar changes to scheduled payments.
This will mean payments due on the bank holiday Monday for State Pension and benefits including Universal Credit, Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) will also land in bank accounts on Friday, April 28.
The Coronation of King Charles III takes place on Saturday, May 6 which means Monday, May 8 will also be classed as a bank holiday. HMRC and DWP have both confirmed payments due on that date will be made on Friday, May 5.
Payments are being made early to ensure DWP offices and phone lines are open to deal with any customer queries have about their State Pension or scheduled benefit payments.
The bank holiday immediately after the Coronation of King Charles on May 6 has been set aside for volunteering and is being billed as ‘the big help out’. Organised by The Together Coalition and a wide range of partners such as The Scouts, the Royal Voluntary Service and faith groups from across the UK, the big help out aims to highlight the positive impact volunteering has on communities.
Buckingham Palace said in tribute to the King's public service, the big help out ‘will encourage people to try volunteering for themselves and join the work being undertaken to support their local areas’. The aim of the day is to use volunteering to bring communities together and create a lasting volunteering legacy from the Coronation weekend.
