Hundreds of people thought to have died in Iran following the strikes by US and Israeli forces on Saturday with the numbers expected to rise. Six US service members have been killed since the conflict began on Saturday.
For the last decade Donald Trump has denounced US military intervention in other countries; back in December 2016 the then president elect said; “We will stop racing to topple foreign regimes that we know nothing about, that we shouldn’t be involved with.”
He also said: “Great nations do not fight endless wars” in his State of the Union address in 2019 and repeatedly promised to bring US troops home during his election campaigns. During the 2016 campaign, Trump argued that the US had become “the policemen of the world” and said the country could no longer afford to play that role.
Now, following the US government’s decision to join Israel attacking Iran , critics argue that Trump risks drawing the United States into exactly the kind of lengthy Middle East conflict he long warned against. Supporters say the action was necessary to deter Iran and protect US interests and allies.
