For many Americans, Thanksgiving is a chance to relax, spend time with family, and show gratitude. Many also take the opportunity to celebrate the origins of the US, and the pilgrims who held the “first Thanksgiving” in 1621.
It is also a time of the year when people reflect on America’s violent colonial history. Since 1970 there has been a National Day of Mourning on the same day as Thanksgiving, which commemorates the many Native Americans who died at the hands of the settlers, and challenges some of the myths surrounding the holiday.
How do you feel about Thanksgiving in 2023, and what does it mean to you? Is there anything you think people should know more about it?
