People in Cardiff don't feel safe on Queen Street, survey finds

People feel that Queen Street in Cardiff city centre has become less safe, a survey has found.

The results came from a WalesOnline survey that asked people if they think that antisocial behaviour has become a problem on the street and if they feel safe or not.

Almost 2,000 people responded to the survey. The full results are below.

It is should be noted that this is not a reflective sample of the whole of Queen Street. The survey was open to anyone and is therefore likely to attract people who care very deeply about the issues.

The results are also not the definitive view of people in Cardiff but instead a reflection of what the people who completed the survey think.

Do you think antisocial behaviour is a problem on Queen Street?

We asked people if they think antisocial behaviour is a problem on Cardiff's Queen Street and 1,940 people submitted a response.

Of those, 90% (1750) said that Queen Street did have an antisocial behaviour problem, compared to 10% (190) who said it didn't.

Does antisocial behaviour put you off walking down this street and/or visiting establishments on it?

Our second survey question asked people if they think that antisocial behaviour on Queen Street put them off walking down the street or visiting establishments on it and 1,938 people responded.

1,591 or 82%, said they were put off walking down the street or visiting establishments on it (WalesOnline)

The vast majority of those people, 1,591 or 82%, said they were put off walking down the street or visiting establishments on it.

This was compared to 347, or 18%, of respondents who felt they weren't put off walking down or visiting establishments on Queen Street.

Do you feel safe on Queen Street?

Our next survey focused on whether people felt safe on Queen Street or not, and 1,932 people responded.

Of those 1,932, 80% or 1,545 said they did not feel safe and 20% or 387 people said they did.

The results come after a Freedom of Information (FOI) request submitted to South Wales Police by WalesOnline asked for a l ist of the streets in Cardiff with the most anti-social behaviour complaints over a 12 month period to December 31, 2021.

Queen Street was listed as one of the 20 worst streets for anti-social behaviour in Cardiff according to data released by police.
