Apple will be putting the power in their consumers’ hands with their new Self Service Repair scheme.

The technology giant will provide genuine parts and instructions to those who are confident completing a device repair at home. For those who don’t seem so sure, professional repair providers with certified technicians will still be available.

“Creating greater access to Apple genuine parts gives our customers even more choice if a repair is needed,” said Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer.

“In the past three years, Apple has nearly doubled the number of service locations with access to Apple genuine parts, tools, and training, and now we’re providing an option for those who wish to complete their own repairs.”

Here’s how it will work:

What is it?

Apple’s Self Service Repair is intended for those with “knowledge and experience” to repair their devices.

There will be a new Self Service Repair Online Store that will provide customers with all the tools they need, such as replacement parts and instructions. Apple added that the store will offer more than 200 individual parts and tools.

How will it work?

Apple will direct customers, in need of a repair, to review Apple’s Repair Manual, where they can order everything they need to fix hardware issues at home.

Once the repair is done, they can return used parts in exchange for credit toward their purchase.

When will it launch?

The Self Service Repair scheme will kickstart next year in the US. Apple plan on having more countries to follow in 2022, with parts first available for the iPhone 12 and 13 ranges.

Apple plans on expanding the service for additional repairs later next year. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 repairs will be followed by Mac computers featuring M1 chips.
