People 'begging' for go kart track in Debenhams building

The prospect of a go karting track being created inside Liverpool's former Debenhams site sparked excitement among ECHO readers.

Liverpool Council's Planning Committee will meet next week to decide whether or not to approve plans from Grosvenor, the owners of the Liverpool ONE estate.

Liverpool Council's planning committee will run the rule over an application from Grosvenor, the landlord of Liverpool ONE, who want to convert part of the vacant 185,000 sq ft department store into leisure space - which could feature a go-kart track.

The new proposal from Grosvenor is to retain retail use in the lower and upper ground levels of the building and use the first and second levels for leisure purposes - which could include an indoor go-karting track.

The main entrance for the site would be from Chavasse Park.

News of the plans was welcomed by many today who felt it could bring something new to the city centre.

Responding on twitter, Liam Fitz said: "Mario Kart is coming to Liverpool - fingers crossed."

Ben Kelly saw the article and said: "Omg please, I'm begging", while Jonah added: "That would be unreal."

The Prosocial Place twitter account described the plans as an 'interesting repurposing idea', adding: "Not a lot different to a cinema complex and will provide something for young people to do and a place to socialise.

"A traditional shopping centre would have been a lot more inflexible - demonstrates the adaptability of the L1 masterplan."

Others pointed out that a similar project had been carried out in the vacant Debenhams building in the London borough of Wandsworth.

Clare said: "They’ve done this with Debenhams in Wandsworth. Looked pretty popular when I walked past there last week."

Our Kid added: "Wandsworth Debenhams has already been turned into a go kart centre, interesting change of high street use."

While planning officers have recommended the plans are approved, it will be down to the council's elected planning committee to make the final decision when it meets at Liverpool Town Hall on February 8.
