People are just discovering what pink mould actually is

There are a number of people on social media who are just discovering what pink mould actually is.

Appearing in most bathrooms from time to time, many would be forgiven for thinking it was a build up of products like shampoo. But the pink residue that sometimes collects on grout, around plugs and along bath seals is actually a form of bacteria or fungus.

Usually it is aureobasidium pullulans [a yeast-like fungus] and serratia marcescens [a known known human pathogen], can cause urinary tract infections, digestive problems and in rare cases pneumonia. The good news is they are easy to get rid of.

A number of explainer videos on TkTok have racked up thousands of views as people realised for the first time the unsightly build up was in fact a living organism. As with mould, it is recommended you wear a mask and gloves when using cleaning products to get rid of the bacteria.

And it is usually best to have the room well ventilated, so crack open that window. Most over the counter products will eradicate the bacteria but you may want to reach for your favourite grout cleaner for the more stubborn staining.
