Pensioners miss Champions League final and Jubilee coverage as TVs not working for a week

Pensioners were said to be unable to watch coverage of the Champions League final or the Platinum Jubilee after the TV aerial at a retirement flat complex stopped working.

Housing firm Riverside has apologised after residents at Dene Court, a complex of retirement apartments on Long Lane in Fazakerley, were without TV for over a week due to problems with the aerial. A relative of a resident, who wished to remain anonymous, told the ECHO that the TV stopped working on Saturday, May 28 and had not been fixed by the Platinum Jubilee weekend.

The relative said that there were a number of disappointed residents who were unable to watch Liverpool play Real Madrid in the Champions League final, as well as the Jubilee coverage a week later. The relative told the ECHO : " The vast majority of the residents in there are all at least 75, if not older. Most of them have got no way of getting out, so the TV is really important.

"With the Queen’s Jubilee going on, they had no way to watch it. They were there without the TV, they didn’t know what was going on and they weren’t able to enjoy it.

"The TV, often, is all they have. They have a communal area where they can go down and watch TV together but that one wasn’t working. They had absolutely nothing at all.

"You expect a basic thing like an aerial on a roof to be working. There are some people there whose days would have been made by watching the Jubilee on the TV. It might have made them feel happy."

On Tuesday (June 8), a spokesperson for Riverside said: “We can confirm the TV aerial was not working last week at Dene Court, our retirement living scheme in Liverpool, but it has now been fixed. We’re really sorry to those customers who were not able to watch TV at the scheme over the Platinum Jubilee weekend. We will be holding a special Jubilee breakfast later this week, where we hope to recreate at least some of the magic of the Jubilee celebrations for our customers.”
