A 70-year-old man has died in hospital after suffering a significant head injury in North Tyneside.
Northumbria Police received a report from the ambulance service shortly before 1.30am on Saturday (October 29) that a man had been found unconscious in Shrewsbury Drive, Backworth.
The elderly man was taken to hospital but later sadly died of his injuries.
This morning (October 31), floral tributes had been placed outside the man's property on Shrewsbury Drive. One local resident said that a police cordon was put in place following the incident while officers investigated the scene.
The force have since confirmed that no third party is thought to have been involved in the incident.
The man's family is being supported by Northumbria Police at this time following their tragic loss.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 1.30am on Saturday, we were altered by the ambulance service to a report of an unconscious man in Shrewsbury Drive, Backworth.
“The 70-year-old man was taken to hospital suffering from a significant head injury. He sadly later died of his injuries. His family are being supported by specialist officers at this time.
“No third party is believed to be involved. A report has been sent for the coroner.”
