A man died after "misjudging" a step off the promenade in Prestatyn while riding his mobility scooter. Richard Jones, 78, of Ffordd Idwal in Prestatyn, was out for a stroll with his wife when the incident occured on August 7, 2022.
The inquest held at Ruthin County Hall heard that Mr Jones had suffered a bleed on the brain in th 1970s which impacted his mobility. Purchasing a mobility scooter allowed Mr Jones to continue his beloved walks with his wife along the prom near their home. The inquest heard that Mr Jones "fell over a lot" and sometimes struggled to control his scooter.
North Wales Live reports that on August 7, Mr Jones is said to have "misjudged" the promenade edge while on his mobility scooter and fell around eight feet down some steps. Mr Jones was taken to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and sustained "serious head injuries." The inquest heard that he was given palliative care and sadly died six days later at the Bodelwyddan hospital on August 13, 2022.
The inquest heard that Mr Jones' cause of death was a bilateral subdural haematoma and subarachnoid haemorrhage due to a fall from height. Senior coroner for North Wales east and central John Gittins concluded it was an accidental death.
