Pensioner dies after crashing van close to recycling centre in Newton Mearns

A pensioner has died after crashing a van while driving on the A77 near Newton Mearns.

The 73-year-old was travelling in a Ford Transit van on the road close to Greenhaggs Recycling Centre when he was involved in a single-vehicle crash around 5.15pm on Saturday.

Members of the public stopped to assist the man before emergency services arrived and he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Police are appealing for anyone who witnesses the incident to come forward.

Sergeant Paul Mellis, from the Glasgow Road Policing Unit, said: “At this time, our thoughts are very much with the family and friends of the deceased.

“Enquiries into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing. We know that a number of motorists and members of the public stopped to assist at the scene, prior to emergency services arriving, and I would ask anyone who has not spoken to police to please get in touch.

“If you have any information, please call us on 101, quoting incident 2701 of 20 August, 2022.”
