Penrith NRL rookie charged with assault

Young Penrith star Taylan May will continue playing in the NRL despite facing a charge of assault from an alleged incident in Queensland last year.

The Panthers confirmed on Wednesday night the 20-year-old had been charged by Queensland Police with assault occasioning bodily harm of another male and is due to face court next month.

It's believed the matter was immediately referred to the NRL's integrity unit last year, before being charged earlier this year.

AAP also understands Penrith spoke to the NRL integrity unit again before the winger made his NRL return last month, and he was given the go ahead.

The flyer has been a sensation at the defending premiers, scoring five tries in just two games this year while filling in for Brian To'o.

"The club was made aware of the incident at the time, informed the NRL Integrity Unit and undertook an investigation into the matter," Penrith said in a statement.

"The club subsequently implemented disciplinary measures against May, while giving fair consideration to the circumstances of the incident, and deemed the matter finalised.

"The NRL has not imposed any disciplinary measures against May, therefore he is eligible for NRL selection."

The NRL has also confirmed they are happy to allow the court process to play out, meaning he can face Canterbury on Sunday night at CommBank Stadium.

The incident is the latest in a string of dramas following Penrith's premiership celebrations, which included May's brother Tyrone being sacked by the club following a social media post after previous offences.
