The Clairton Sportmen's Club in Pennsylvania, where Thomas Matthew Crooks practiced his shooting skills, reopened on Monday following a visit from the FBI. The investigation stems from a security breach that allowed an armed individual to come within 130 yards of former President Trump.
While it remains unclear if any significant evidence was discovered at the range, members of the club have strongly denounced Crooks and his violent actions, emphasizing that such behavior is not representative of their community.
In a statement, the club's attorney, Rob Bootay, expressed the organization's disapproval of the violence and extended condolences to the Comperatore family and all those affected by the incident, including the former President.
The Clairton Sportmen's Club is known for hosting sports shooting events and promoting firearms safety, like several other clubs in the area.
The FBI's involvement in the case includes efforts to determine a motive for the attack, with a focus on analyzing data retrieved from the suspect's phone. Sources familiar with the investigation revealed that Crooks used a DPMS AR-15 5.56 rifle to target Trump and bystanders, a weapon purchased by his father in 2013.
Evidence such as the rifle, the suspect's phone and laptop, as well as an improvised explosive device found in his car, are currently being examined at the FBI's forensics lab in Quantico, Virginia.
