Penneys store forced to close and gardai called after brawl breaks out as horrified shoppers look on

A Penneys store in an Irish shopping centre reportedly had to close early on Wednesday afternoon after two women got into a violent row.

The public order incident broke out in the shop at Longford Shopping Centre in Longford town at around 4pm.

Gardai were called to the scene and two women were subsequently arrested.

It is understood shoppers looked on in horror while the assault took place and the shop was forced to close early in response.

The two women are currently detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Longford Garda station.

Gardai say their investigations are ongoing.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí are investigating an assault that took place in Longford town, shortly before 4pm.

"Two females were arrested and are currently detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Longford Garda station.

"Investigations are ongoing."

Penneys confirmed that they were assisting gardai with the probe.

A spokesperson told the Irish Mirror: "We are aware of an incident which took place in our Longford store this afternoon and we are supporting the Gardaí with their enquiries."
