Detroit Lions right tackle Penei Sewell quickly proved to be one of the NFL’s best at his position during his rookie season. Once Sewell moved from left tackle to the right side, he was an outstanding force that helped the Lions finish the season on a definite upswing. And he did so as the youngest player in the league, too.
Yet Sewell does not appear in the 2022 edition of the “top 25 players under 25” from Pro Football Focus. It’s a puzzling omission from PFF, which has consistently trumpeted Sewell and his play at right tackle. Then again, there are only two offensive tackles on the entire list: Tampa Bay’s Tristan Wirfs and fellow 2021 rookie RaShawn Slater of the Chargers, who topped Sewell’s overall grade from PFF last year.
San Francisco EDGE Nick Bosa (24) tops the list, followed by Chargers QB Justin Herbert (24) and Colts RB Jonathan Taylor (23). Sewell did earn notice in the honorable mention category.
The good news for Sewell is that he has a few more seasons to prove he belongs on the list. Detroit’s fixture at RT turned 21 last October.
