Pedestrians landed in the dock after they reacted angrily to a car being driven towards them.
Martin Carroll, 40, and Thomas Gallagher, 31, were each fined £470 and ordered to do 180 hours of unpaid community work.
Carroll, of Montalto Avenue, Motherwell, admitted possession of a bladed item - garden shears - without reasonable excuse.
Gallagher, of Taylor Avenue, Carfin, admitted culpable and reckless conduct by throwing bricks at the vehicle.
The incident happened in Montalto Avenue on June 4, 2020.
Alice Carey, prosecuting, said CCTV operators saw a group of males outside Carroll’s home around 1am.
She told Hamilton Sheriff Court: “They were looking along the street at a red car that was being driven deliberately towards them.
“Gallagher was seen to pick up bricks and throw them at the moving vehicle.
“The CCTV cameras then showed another vehicle arrive and collect three people. Carroll was in possession of garden shears and was seen to place these in the car.
“Police officers arrived and stopped the vehicle. Gallagher was in a rear passenger seat. Carroll had gone back to his house and he was arrested there.”
Defence agent Diarmid Bruce said Carroll and his friends went outside after hearing a noise.
Carroll picked up garden shears that were lying in his garden. He then saw the car “veering towards them” as the driver attempted to “frighten them”.
Ian Brechany, defending Gallagher, added: “This was something out of nothing.
“The vehicle wasn’t hit by the stones and didn’t stop. There was no report to the police. It was the cameras that led the police to get involved.”
