Pedestrian taken to hospital with head injuries after being knocked down on A167 Ponteland Road

A pedestrian has suffered head injuries after being knocked down on the A167 in Newcastle.

Emergency services were called at around 10.30am on Tuesday to reports a pedestrian had been struck by a car travelling south on the A167 Ponteland Road in Newcastle.

Northumbria Police, North East Ambulance Service and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service were all called to the crash.

Two ambulances and a rapid response car were sent to the scene while two crews from the fire service also attended.

The ambulance service confirmed two patients were treated at the scene, the driver and the pedestrian who had suffered head injuries.

Both have been taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for further treatment.

The road was closed while emergency services were on the scene, but it has since been reopened.

A spokesperson from Northumbria Police said: "Shortly before 10.30am, police received a report that a pedestrian had been struck by a car travelling southbound on the A167, Ponteland Road, Newcastle.

"Officers and emergency services attended the scene and the male pedestrian was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"Traffic was obstructed while emergency services were in attendance, but the road has since reopened."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 10.25 this morning to reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian.

"We dispatched two ambulances and a rapid response car. We treated two patients, one with head injuries and the other was the driver. Both patients were taken to the RVI."

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We can confirm that two crews from West Denton Community Fire Station were deployed earlier this morning to a road traffic collision on the A167 at Ponteland Road.

“The appliances were quickly on the scene at 10:32am which was five minutes after our Fire Control team received the initial emergency call.

"Our firefighters assisted blue light colleagues at North East Ambulance Service throughout the incident with the crews being on location for just over 15 minutes.”
