Pedestrian dies in Brixton Road collision

A pedestrian has died after being hit by a lorry near Brixton Underground Station.

Emergency services were called to the junction of Brixton Road and Acre Lane, near Lambeth Town Hall, around 9.40am on Monday.

Metropolitan Police officers and London Ambulance Services attended but tragically, a man died at the scene. Enquiries to confirm his identify and inform next of kin remain ongoing.

Police said they were called to reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and a heavy goods vehicle (HGV).“The HGV did not stop at the scene but has since been traced,” the Met said in a statement.

“There have been no arrests and the driver is assisting police with their enquiries.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We sent two ambulance crews and an incident response officer to the scene.

“The first paramedic arrived in less than five minutes. Sadly a man died at the scene.”

Traffic came to a standstill as ambulances blocked off the A23, a major thoroughfare through the south London neighbourhood.

Police say road closures are expected “for some time” as enquiries are ongoing.

Labour MP for Vauxhall Florence Eshalomi has urged people to avoid central Brixton.

“Sadly there was a serious accident close to the junction outside the town hall and someone has died - my thoughts are with his family members,” she wrote on Twitter.

Brixton Road is blocked in both directions at the Acre Lane and Coldharbour Lane crossroads, causing major congestion through the centre of Brixton.

Coldharbour Lane is shut betwen Railton Road and Brixton Road. Acre Lane is closed between Brixton Road and the Tesco, police said.

Traffic is snaking to Villa Road, back past Stockwell Road, and there are long northbound queues along Brixton Hill, AA traffic news said. Brixton Hill is closed at Water Lane.

A welfare centre has been set up in Lambeth Town Hall and Civic Centre for anyone affected by the collision.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to contact them, referencing the case number 1725/06FEB22.
