Pedestrian, 53, taken to hospital after being knocked over by car on Great North Road in Newcastle

A 53-year-old pedestrian has been taken to hospital after being knocked over by a car in Newcastle.

Emergency crews attended the scene of the incident on the Great North Road between Regent Centre and Gosforth Academy after 12.30pm on Wednesday. A man, aged 53, was knocked over by a car.

The Great North Road was subsequently closed between Regent Centre and Gosforth Academy. The closure led to delays in and around the road with afternoon traffic tailing back as a result.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said at the time: “Shortly before 12.30pm today (Wednesday), we received a report of a collision on Great North Road between Regent Centre and Gosforth Academy.

“It was reported that a car had collided with a 53-year-old pedestrian.

“Ambulance is currently on scene and the road is currently closed in both directions.”

The North East Ambulance Service said that one person was taken to hospital as a result of the collision. A spokesman said: "We got a call at 1.45pm to attend a road traffic collision between a car and a pedestrian on the Great North Road. One paramedic crew attended and we treated a patient for a back injury before taking them to hospital."

The road is now open again.
