Peckham: Woman dies in south London's second fatal house fire in 24 hours

A woman has died following a house fire in Peckham - less than 24 hours after a person was killed in another fatal south London blaze.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) was called to an end-of-terrace house in Crane Street, Peckham, around 7.40pm on Sunday.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued a woman from the building using an internal staircase.

She was given emergency treatment by firefighters and paramedics, but was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fire damaged part of the first floor of the house. Around 25 firefighters spent around an hour and 45 minutes tackling the flames, which were extinguished by 9.25pm.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service,” said LFB on Monday.

The tragedy came less than two days after another fatal blaze, around two miles away in Railton Road, which lies between Brixton and Herne Hill.

LFB was called to a block of flats there around 11.40pm on Saturday.

“Firefighters found a person in the living room who was sadly pronounced dead at the scene,” said LFB in a statement.

It added that “most” of a two-room flat on the second floor of the block was damaged by fire.

Around 25 firefighters were also sent to tackle that blaze, which was under control by around 12.25am.

The cause of that fire is also under investigation.
